Tips How to Pose in Pictures

Photography you say, let me clam up!!! Nooo!

First of all, it is so important to feel relaxed.  Think of it, you are living your best self, dressed in your best outfit and looking your best.  Why wouldn’t someone want to take pictures of you?

Very first thought should be in your mind: Relax and smile

How hard can it be? I know from myself, it takes a little while to get comfortable in front of the camera.  That is why I like to take a few shots which are not really posed at all.  I want to capture how you look and feel normally.  I would probably ask you to go for a slow walk and look away from the camera, so I can snap a few shots of you walking.

Next thought should be: Do something with your hands

Hands tend to just  hang, and when taking photos, we all wonder, what are these normally useful limbs supposed to do? Well if you are a man, then a safe bet is tucking them into your pockets or crossing your arms.  For women, there are more choices, like putting one on the hips or framing your face/chin with one of them.  For my clients, I also offer props like flowers to hold, this gives the hands something to do so they can relax too.

Where to look when taking photos

If in doubt, I always say smile and look at the camera! However looking away and looking at family members within the photo shoot, is also very powerful. Generally I like to take looking at the camera shots early on, and then focus on getting candid shots, to capture real emotions and interactions.  You will often  hear me say, now look at each other!

Movement within the shots

While static shots are good where everyone smiles and looks at the camera, I personally love the shots with more movement, showing how you do life.  How do you move, where do you go, where do you want to go? How do you embrace your loved ones, how do you pick up your little children, how do you show affection to your partner? These are moments really worth capturing and then cherishing.

Use of Props

I personally love using props when I am taking client pictures as well as self portraits.  They support the story I am telling and enhance the shot.  And bonus, they give something for your hands to do!

I hope that has helped you feel more comfortable.  On the day of the photo shoot, I will guide you with poses to ensure we capture you perfectly as you are!
